Shelving & Cabinetry
Alcoves, chimney breasts and long blank walls are the space most houses waste. Built-in shelving turns them into storage that looks like part of the room.
Shelving looks like the simplest thing a joiner makes, and it is usually where a bad job shows. Shelf depths that do not match the books, spans that sag, uprights that ignore the cornice, spacing that fights the window reveal. We set shelving out against the room first, against the cornice, skirting, picture rail and window line, so the finished wall reads as part of the house.
Closed storage below and open shelving above is the usual answer for a living room, though not always the right one. We will tell you when a full run of doors works better, and when leaving the wall alone works better still.
Finishes include hand-painted timber matched to your wall colour, stained and oiled hardwoods, and lacquer or veneer where you want something sharper.

Common questions
Can you match existing cornice and skirting?
Yes. Matching mouldings, scribing to uneven walls and continuing existing profiles is standard practice for us on period properties.
Do you make shelving for awkward or listed spaces?
We do. We have worked on Grade II* listed and conservation-area properties where the joinery has to be reversible and sympathetic to the existing fabric.
